Making Fashion Work for You, Not the Other Way around

Sometimes it feels like fashion is an uphill battle. Everyone has had those days when it seems like everything you put on just doesn’t look right. Most of the time, however, instead of blaming the garment we blame ourselves.

I’m here to tell you that that’s a load of bull.

Clothes are mass produced but not in a mass of sizes. The clothing industry somehow wants all of our beautiful bodies to magically fit into only a handful of sizes. Huge improvements have been made in the past decade but we are still far from having a variety of sizes and shapes accessible to everyone. I’ve got a booty, and I know it. It can be a struggle for me to find form fitting skirts and pants that comfortably fit my hips and then also fit my slimmer waist. Everyone is on this struggle bus together.

But what if we thought a little out of the box when it comes to our clothes? Most people think there is only one way to to wear a garment, and that is how the mannequin wore it in the store. NOT TRUE. You can wear that garment however makes you feel confident!

I’m sure you’re probably thinking, “Annie, I can’t just go around wearing all my shirts backwards.” And no, I’m not telling you to throw all the fashion rules you’ve ever learned out the window. Please no one wear shorts on their head or shirts as skirts. Just find what works for you! Here are a couple ideas to get your creative gears going:

  • Wrap a necklace around your wrist multiple times for a stacked bracelet look.

  • Don’t just stick to flannels to tie around your waist, try other long sleeved options for a statement.

  • Pants too long but you love the fit? Make them into cut offs.

  • Any button up shirt can be tied at the bottom to make it more casual.

  • Pull a maxi skirt up over your chest to make a sleeveless dress. Add a belt to define your waist.

The point is that you make the rules about how to wear clothes, not the garment.

I challenge you to find a new way to wear one garment this week! Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with the new way to wear it :)

Head on over to my IGTV channel to hear me talk more in depth about my personal experience. It has the same title as this post!
